The Land of Her // Bruce

Dates
25 & 27 September

Location
Neilson Studio at Sydney Dance Company

Duration
60 mins

Step into a double bill of intimate, physically charged duets that unpack the complexities of female friendship and the unspoken codes of Australian masculinity.

The Land of Her // Bruce is a compelling contemporary dance double bill that dives deep into the complexities of human connection through two powerful duets. In The Land of Her, two women move through moments of tension, tenderness, conflict, and care—capturing the ever-shifting terrain of female friendship. Their bodies speak in silences, glances, and bursts of physicality, reflecting the deep emotional undercurrents that often go unspoken.

In contrast, Bruce throws us into a world of playful aggression, roughness, and vulnerability as two men navigate the physical rituals of male bonding. Performed in the round, the audience is drawn close into a space where mateship and masculinity are expressed through challenge, support, and unguarded moments of intimacy. With echoes of the Australian ‘larrikin spirit’, Bruce unpacks the coded ways men relate to each other—where strength often masks tenderness.

Presented together, these works create a powerful counterpoint—two sides of the same coin—that invites audiences to reflect on how we connect, communicate, and care for one another. Through athletic, emotionally resonant performance, the double bill offers a raw, honest, and at times playful take on gendered relationships in all their complexity.

Whether you’re drawn to fierce female dynamics or fascinated by the contradictions of masculinity, this is an evening of dance that invites you in, challenges your perceptions, and leaves you thinking long after the final bow.
