After taking part in Sydney Dance Company’s 2025 Winter School Holiday Workshop, 10-year-old Guinevere and her mum Kristine share what made the experience stand out — from the chance to try new styles and learn from inspiring teachers, to the supportive environment that encourages creativity and confidence in every dancer.

When did you start dancing?
I was a baby ballerina, I was 18 months old.

What do you love about dancing?
I love how you can express your feelings and all the different styles you can do. There is always room to improve too. I like how teachers can show us ways to dance, and then we get to try it. We also dance in groups too and sometimes we can watch each other perform, and I think that’s kind of amazing too.

What do you think is special about Sydney Dance Company?
I think the special thing about Sydney Dance Company is how they’re so inclusive, and how everyone at any style and any age can really dance.

What classes did you do at Sydney Dance Company?
Yesterday I did the Winter School Holiday camp.
First we did some JFH and the teacher was really nice! They showed us how to do a nice warm-up, a fun boppy dance and a little bit of games, which was really fun.
Then we did Jazz with Mia. I have actually had Mia before in the Primary Youth Ensemble. I really like Mia and the way she gets us moving every lesson.
Then we did some hip-hop and we learnt a little bit about the background of it, which was fun to see where it’s come from and why there is a little bit of breakdancing in there.  We did lots of moving around the classroom and got to perform the dance for each other.

What would you tell your friends about Sydney Dance Company and coming to the School Holiday Workshop program?
I will tell them about how Sydney Dance Company workshops are for everyone. It’s not just if you’re a really professional dancer, it’s also for if you have never danced before and you want to try something new.

Do you have a favourite style from the workshops?
Probably Jazz. That was really fun and boppy.

Why did you choose Sydney Dance Company for your child?
I wanted her to try something different. Definitely the calibre of the teachers she gets as well!

What has your child learnt whilst being at Sydney Dance Company?
I love that she’s learning that it doesn’t matter about being the best technical dancer and it’s about being able to express yourself and what it means for you to be able to dance. I also love that she gets to see some of the older dancers that are still coming to take dance classes. She learns that dance is for life and so the skills that she’s learned now she’ll be able to do forever and always have that love for dance.

Would you recommend Sydney Dance Company to other people and why?
I would 100% recommend it. I think it’s great that there’s something that the kids can go and do in the holidays. Especially because it is something they enjoy doing. I think it’s great that they get to have different teachers and the calibre of the teachers is amazing.
