For Maeve, dancing is more than a hobby, it’s a future career. Currently training full-time at Queensland National Ballet, she returned to Sydney to take part in the 2025 Winter School Holiday Workshop at Sydney Dance Company. Maeve and her mum Stephanie share what made the experience worthwhile, from the depth of teaching to the opportunity to refine technique, explore different styles, and connect with like-minded dancers in a supportive, inspiring environment.

When did you start dancing?
I started dancing when I was two and a half.

What do you love about dancing?
I love how free you can feel and it just makes me happy. I have recently moved to Brisbane to do full time dancing at Queensland National Ballet. I was fortunate to receive some scholarship money from a competition so I decided to come to Sydney Dance Company as I knew it would inspire me.

What do you think is special about coming to Sydney Dance Company?
I like its unique style. I really love the contemporary here and it’s probably what I want to do in my future, so I really wanted to come here and get a feel for it

What did you do during the School Holiday Workshops yesterday?
Yesterday our first class was contemporary, which I really enjoyed because that was probably the class I was most looking forward to. After that we had lyrical which I really loved because I love that you get to dance and express yourself to the lyrics and then we had hip-hop which was really fun and it was nice to change it up a bit. Then we finished with jazz and it was a music theatre focus which was really great.
I really like how the teachers are constructive and they help you through all the movements. They break everything down well so you can really get it and they don’t go too fast. They just make the class really enjoyable, they make it fun and encourage you.
My favourite class has been the contemporary class. I loved the combos we did and the floor progressions.

What would you tell your friends about Sydney Dance Company and coming to the School Holiday Workshop program?
I would tell them to definitely come because it’s just the whole dance experience. You can do everything here, no matter what style you like, pretty much all of the styles are here. It’s just a great way to learn from new teachers.

Why did you choose Sydney Dance Company for your child?
We had seen Sydney Dance Company perform in Port Macquarie a couple of years ago. We went with other families from my daughter’s local dance school and we loved it. But I’ve known about Sydney Dance Company for a very long time and my daughter really loves contemporary dance so I thought this would be a great experience in the holidays. It’s just good to have a holiday dance program. We’ve enjoyed coming down to Sydney.

What has your child learnt whilst being at Sydney Dance Company?
Well, I think it’s just really good to have a different experience. The teachers each teach differently, and it really gives them an opportunity to learn a range of styles of dance as well as meet other dancers her age.

Would you recommend Sydney Dance Company to other people and why?
Yes I would. If other parents were looking to do something similar, I would say there is such a range of classes at Sydney Dance Company. When I’ve looked online at all the different options and the age groups, there is a good variety and it’s a great experience. Also nice for families if they are travelling from the country down to the city for a holiday. The kids have something fun to go to and the parents can go explore Sydney, look at exhibitions for example. it’s a really great holiday activity.
